Following Google’s press conference they have now officially launched Google Instant in the US, with major roll-outs planned across Europe. As explained in yesterdays post, Google instant is a new search engine experience where Google will actually try to complete your keyword search by predicting your search. As a user types more letters into the search box the search results change.

In fact Google instant is now being tested in the UK but is only available when a user is logged in. Google will soon fully roll out its instant search feature in the UK , but what will the potential impact be for search agencies and their clients. My thoughts on this are below:

Inform your clients and don’t panic

All search engine agencies keep up to date with the latest industry changes but your clients won’t. It is important that you inform your clients as quickly as possible letting them know they may well see some traffic changes over the next few weeks. You should detail how as an agency you are looking into the update and possible affects it may have. The main thing to inform your clients is not to panic, don’t look at your Google Analytics reports every day, the data in Google Analytics is only useful over a period of time and results may be vague.

Most importantly you should not make any quick decisions as to your online marketing plan due to the update, if your marketing plan is working there is no need to change it yet. Let your SEO company review the data in your analytics account and let the professionals make some decisions as to your online marketing strategy

How it could affect SEO

There are many possible SEO affects that the Google instant update may affect, I have detailed some of my thoughts below:

• Reinforces top positions – The search bar in Google Instant is slighter larger, this will make the scroll smaller meaning there are less results on the page. For users using low resolution monitors they may only see one or two results


• Enforces big brands – Large brands will tend to rank for more short tail search terms, meaning that these brands could potentially receive more clicks than previously


• Adult search terms – When you search for a selection of adult search terms instant search does not work. A user has to hit enter before they are displayed with results, this may well reduce clicks for these terms as users may believe there are no results


• Longtail – Some users who regularly use the internet may type quicker than Google instant can react, for these users the affect will be minimal. The change will also reduce the level of long tail search terms as it consolidates search volumes into a smaller set of search terms


• SEO Tools – All SEO companies use a range of keyword search tools to analyse traffic and create SEO campaigns. Following this update we need to be careful that the data we collect for a search term is accurate and not polluted by inaccurate impression data

Affect on Analytics data

One interesting question is how Google Instant may affect Google Analytics data. Obviously if your site is clicked on when a user searches for a short-query such as ‘w’, then the visit may mean nothing to you. Google has stated that the data in Google Analytics will assume the most popular search term, in this case ‘weather’. It would be useful however to be able to extract the original search term in Google Analytics so that you know the short tail terms your site is appearing for. PPC

This update will change what Google see’s as an impression, an impression for PPC could now be one of the following:

It is good news that Google will wait 3 seconds before counting the search as an impression, this should go some way to keep impression numbers for PPC down. The changes however will make it more difficult for PPC managers to evaluate the data they are receiving.

It could also mean more clicks for short tail queries, a user may click on a PPC advert in the middle of their search journey. Short tail search terms are more expensive than long tail search terms which may mean smaller business are affected, to counteract this Google may place more strength on the quality score of the landing page and other factors.

Conclusion

At the moment the impacts on this update are merely theory’s, the implications on PPC and SEO can be easily over or under estimated. Some bloggers are even stating that this blows SEO out of the water. My thoughts are that this makes a strong seo strategy even more important.

Every now and again it is easy to be distracted from the basics of on-page SEO when you are looking further into issues on a website. Sometimes you could be overlooking something that seems obvious – but only when you consider the basics. Below is a list of on-page basics that we know are important to SEO rankings.

The Page Title Tag

The title tag plays one of the most important factors in SEO and although it is fairly common knowledge, it’s often overlooked or done incorrectly. It is the title that defines the page and tells the search engines what the page is about. Within the source code the title is defined inside the <title></title> tags which reside between the <head></head> tags.

Within the browser, the title is displayed to the top left of the screen or in the tab, depending on which browser you are using. In the search results pages it shows as the main heading and clickable link; the search term if present, will display in bold.

As each page on a site is different, the title for every page should be too. Aim for unique keywords or phrases targeted towards each page and use no more than 70 characters in total. Going over this will have no benefit whatsoever and won’t have any impact in terms of SEO. It is recommended to add the most important keywords at the start of the title and minimise the use of stop words like ‘a’, ‘of’ and ‘the’.

The Keywords Meta Tag

The keywords Meta tag basically lists the words and phrases that describe the contents of the web page. Every page on your website should have unique keyword tags. In years gone by, the keyword tag was used as part of a search engine’s ranking algorithm but not anymore. Frequent attempts by webmasters to abuse the keyword tag meant that it is now generally ignored. Only Inktomi currently uses the keywords Meta tag.

There is a limit to the number of characters within this tag – it is best to use between 3 and 8 keywords/phrases which are separated by commas. As with your title and Meta description, all keywords used in the keyword Meta tag should be used at least once in the content of your webpage. Even though many search engines do not use this tag any longer, it is still good practise to do so, but do not overuse keywords in the tag, and be sure to place your most important keywords first in the list.

Description Meta Tag

The Meta description tag is used to provide the description of a web page, the description Meta tag should clearly describe the purpose of the page, for both the user and the search engines.

The importance of the description tag in the major search engine as an element of the ranking algorithm has decreased over recent years. However, we are all aware that some of the smaller search engines may still support this tag, and so it may be worthwhile doing this correctly. The search engines display the description along with the title in the SERPS (search engine results pages).

Keep your description between 50 and 200 characters, including spaces, whenever possible. Google will display around 154 characters, but other search engines display less. Description Meta tags should be written to attract the user and convert them to a buyer, so it is important that your description is relevant and has a unique selling point.

Heading Tags (H1-H6)

The header tag is seen by all users of your website and comes in a hierarchical system. The h1 tag should appear first on your page including your most important phrase/service/product and this should be followed by the h2, h3 etc. all the way to h6. It is encouraged and not bad practise to have multiple headlines appearing on a page, like h2, h3 etc., provided they follow a hierarchical order.

Each page should have a clearly defined h1 tag, to identify the main topic of the page to both the user and the search engine. The best way to approach the heading tag is by not stuffing it with too many keywords, or words that are not relevant to the content in the body. Having multiple h1 tags on the same page may cause you to be subjected to a penalty by the search engines.

Phrase elements

The use of <strong></strong> and <em></em> tags can help highlight the keywords of key phrases, both visually and for the search engines. It’s argued that the former tags are preferable to <b></b> and <i></i> tags which are used for visual emphasis and have no impact with search engines. What is true however, is that the latter tags are used for presentation purposes while the <strong> and <em> are in fact semantic tags which would seem to hold more weight in terms of SEO.

Alt Attributes

It is still very common to see sites that keyword stuff their Alt tags, but try and resist the temptation to do this as it many do more harm than good. This was originally done to help improve keyword density. However, with this no longer being as important as it once was, doing so could subject you to penalties such as a drop in rankings to even being filtered out of the search results.

Google tends to make big announcements once every year to do with changes to its search results. Today Google are set to do just that. They have organised a press conference today at 17:30, UK time. All signs suggest that Google will be announcing the launch of their new feature, live search. This feature is a new idea which many believe Google has been testing over the past couple of months.

The most obvious sign which leads us to believe that live search will be launched soon is the new Google logo. If you have used Google today you will have been presented with a “chrome” coloured sign. With each letter typed into the search box, a part of the Google logo fills with colour. This is representative of the way in which live search will work.

What is Live Search?

The term ‘live search’ is self explanatory. It basically means that the search results will change as you type in your search phrase. E.g. if you were searching for the term “strawberry cheesecake” as you type the letters, first you may see results for straw, then strawberries, then lastly, strawberry cheesecake.

This update seems set to be rolled out on Google.com first, but then other Google domains will be sure to follow. As to whether other search engines such as Bing will follow this example is unclear, but if it becomes the default way for which users prefer to search it will certainly be something they need to think seriously about.

What we think the impact of Live Search will be on SEO

At first glance the introduction of live search simply appears to make it quicker for users to get to search results, but we believe it has much bigger implications for SEO.

One of the first issues is that of long tail key terms. It seems to us that long tail search terms may become a thing of the past as they become less and less popular. Using the example of ‘strawberry cheesecake’ again, the user may find a relevant result after only typing strawberry, and subsequently will not need to bother with typing in the whole search phrase they originally intended to.

With this example it seems clear to us that short tail keyphrases will become more popular and will in turn increase the level of competition to optimise for them. We may even see a shift in the type of phrases being optimised where companies concentrate on the first three letters of a popular search term such as ‘str’.

Another factor which could cause a stir is that Google will obviously make assumptions as to what the user is trying to type. This means that it may give preference to certain keyphrases, which will again, make some terms extremely popular and more competitive. We may even find that Google leans more towards its own products and services, ensuring that its sites appear early on in the live search process.

Google already does this in many ways through the auto complete function, where it suggests search terms, relating to what users are typing in, however in our opinion, live search seems set to take this much further.

On a separate note it will be interesting to see if safe search will be incorporated into the new live search feature. The implications are obvious when you think about completing searches that may innocently contain adult terms. Examples of these would be Sexton and Sex Pistols; these are both terms that have nothing to do with the adult industry but may bring up results relating to it as the first few letters are entered ‘sex’.

Pay Per Click Implication

Not only do we think that live search will have a huge impact on organic searches, PPC will also have to be looked at in a different manner.

The sponsored links that appear on most search results are catered for that specific keyword. Every sponsored link displayed within a search result equates to one impression. Therefore effectively with Live Search, the keyphrase ‘strawberry cheesecake’ could result in three or more impressions rather than one. If this is the case, shorter tail keyphrases are set to get a much larger volume of impressions than ever before.

Also, if like we predict, more emphasis it put on shorter tail keyphrases, we may see click through rates decreasing as PPC listings become less relevant with the more generic search terms. This in turn will inevitably lead to greater emphasis on quality as companies strive to get the highest quality score possible for these very competitive broad terms.

Conclusion

It is always difficult to predict what will happen in the future especially in the SEO industry. But as shown by our possible implications above it is clear it will have an obvious impact on which keywords websites will optimise for. Most importantly we need to think of the results that appear between the initial typing of the search term and completed keyword entry.

In some of the video examples of live search there is an option to turn off the live stream, but as this is not the default, the majority of Google users will be utilising the new search feature.

If you look outside the box on this update to the way live search works, and the way we think it will mark a shift towards more generic short tail phrases, it seems that this is yet another move by Google to benefit brands. After all, shorter tail keyphrases mean high levels of competition which only the strongest sites can achieve.
